Board of Directors

Sam Grant

President

I’ve been involved in sports since as far back as I can remember. Through high school and college, I participated in as many sports as I could, eventually settling on Tennis. After graduation, I lacked a competitive outlet, and was introduced to triathlon by my wife (who is as accomplished as me in the sport, if not more) in 2014. The first time I met my wife’s family I was signed up for a sprint triathlon and borrowed the family’s old red, steel bike (which I named Clifford.) I survived the race and was immediately hooked and have been training and racing ever since including proposing to my wife at the finish line of Timberman 70.3 in 2016.
When we settled down in Northern Virginia, we knew we needed to find a group of people that we could share our obsession with. Oddly, co-workers aren’t terribly interested in discussing which Garmin I should get during Happy Hours. We were searching around for a team to join, when a FeXY-er told us to look into their team. After one team event, we were all in.
I’ve completed nine 70.3s and two full Ironmans. I’ve raced for the United States on Team USA at the Long Distance World Championships in Pontevedra, Spain in 2019 and would have again in Bermuda in 2021 if not for COVID. In 2022, I’ll be racing Ironman Lake Placid and then representing FeXY at the 70.3 World Championships in St. George in October.
I’m psyched to represent FeXY as its president, but more so excited to race and motivate others to get out there, have fun, and accomplish their best.

Vice-President & IT Manager

I’ve always been involved with some sort of competitive sports growing up and moving from town to town.
Whether it was martial arts, soccer, surfing, swimming, bmx or mountain biking, I’ve always stayed very busy.
In high school I ran cross-country, track, and indoor track all 4 years and despite receiving numerous acolades
and notarity in this sport, I gave it all up and joined the Navy.

I had the foundation for all three disciplines of triathlon and had actually done a few my summer year after graduating and absolutely love it.
Fast forward thru 6 years of the Navy and my college years at Virginia Tech I found myself running again and learning to love the sport that I once gave up.

At the age of 40 shortly after my daughter was born, I became severely ill as the onset of type 1 diabetes destroyed my body. I lost my eyesight, my ability to walk, debilitating cramps and the loss of nearly 50 pounds due to blood sugars too high to read via normal indicators.  I needed a goal and a focus in my life to get me going.  I picked the hardest one I could find, an Ironman. Considering I couldn’t walk at the time, this was extremely daunting and somewhat of a grasp. But if you know me, nothing is out of reach if I put my mind to it. So 2 years later I crossed the finish line at the first of my two Ironmans.

I was hooked, I joined FeXY that same year and have been a part of this amazing team ever since.  11 years later, I continue to grow my education in the sport, race frequently and have become a Tri Coach, a swim and run coach.  I’ve started my own Coaching business where I have met the most amazing group of athletes that anyone could ask for. I’ve managed to build a world of support around me to help manage my disease and my goals.  At the center of this world is FeXY.

Back in my younger days, I was involved in team sports – both playing & coaching.  I always enjoyed being part of the team and missed it when I stopped. When I hit my 40’s, I decided I needed to take charge of my life again and decided to actually use my gym membership instead of just paying & never stepping foot inside. I started out running in 2012 and have been going ever since.  I was lucky to meet one of my future teammates in 2013 and listened to their stories of triathlon. Seeing how enthusiastic they were about it, I wanted to see what it was all about. I had already done an indoor tri earlier that year and was afraid to put my face in the water.  With their help, I learned how to swim & bought a bike.  I went to races with them to see what it was all about & had a blast. I knew this was a path I wanted to explore. I had found something that made me proud of what I was doing.  In the past four years, I’ve completed numerous triathlons including one half-Ironman (Augusta) and one full Ironman (Maryland).

I really enjoy everything about the sport – training, racing & supporting my teammates.  The team has helped me in so many ways – training partners, advice, and friends who are like family. When I’m out training or racing, I keep going because I’m representing something larger than myself.  I’m glad that I found triathlon & the team when I did because it turned my life around.  Recently the BOD put out a call for help. One thing they needed was someone to help the treasurer. Without giving it a second thought, I threw my name – little did I know it was to be treasurer! I’m happy that I was able to help out. As my friends know, I love to provide support in any way that I can, so being on the board is a great way to give back to the team & sport that has given me so much.

Laurie was an avid and competitive swimmer through high school. She coached Club Swim at Dartmouth College and was a member of the Dartmouth Cycling Team. Laurie started racing in short distance triathlons with family in 2010. After biking across the country in 2012, she decided to try out longer distance tris and hasn’t looked back since. When she introduced Sam (a tennis player) to the sport in 2014, he was instantly hooked.

We have each completed 5+ 70.3’s and got engaged at the finish line of Timberman 70.3 in 2016. We completed our first  Ironman in Louisville in 2017, just three weeks before our wedding. We love to race and compete in as many events as we can each season. In 2019, we both represented Team USA in the Long Distance World Championships in Pontevedra, Spain.

When we settled down in Northern Virginia, we knew we needed to find a group of people that we could share our obsession with. Oddly, co-workers weren’t terribly interested in discussing which Garmin one of us should get during Happy Hours. We were searching around for a team to join, when a FeXY-er told us to look into their team. After one team event, we were all in.

We are so excited to be able to contribute to Team FeXY as Race Directors. We love to race and are psyched to help motivate others to get out there, have fun, and accomplish their best.

Cynthia's Profile Picture

I am a mom, lawyer, crossfit coach and competitor and competitive triathlete and ironman. I’ve been competing in endurance multisport events for 10 years; 5 years in the mid 1980s and for the last 5 years.

I am competitive by nature and have always been involved in athletics and sports in some fashion. Over the years I have had my running, spin, yoga, mountain biking phases. In the last 6 years I have become very involved as a competitor in crossfit and triathlon. I always thought that I was a sprint distance specialist; I would only podium in the sprint distance even though I was competing in International and Half Ironman distances. And I swore to anyone that would listen that I would never do an Ironman.

Being a Sherpa for a few years and watching my Fexy teammates doing the Ironman races, I decided in 2014 to commit to my first. I have completed three Ironman races to date and podiumed in Maryland. This year I was honored to represent Team Fexy at the 70.3 World Championships in Australia. I could not have done it without superb coaching I received and supportive teammates. I am excited to be on the elite team and for what 2017 holds for me.

Jeff Walton

Workout Coordinator

In my younger years, I used to run cross country and track, I was competitive in my local area. I also got to enjoy first-hand road bicycle racing in the comfort of my dad’s car who was a race director. I loved riding my bicycle but I never got to race on it.  I switched to basketball in my high school and college years, and I loved it. But after graduation and travel, it was hard to stay active in a team sport. I played Gaelic football with a local team for a while, then switched back to short distance running and gym workouts to stay active.

In my mid-30s, I felt the need to change my life style, I didn’t feel healthy anymore. I already had a cheap road bike that I rode on the W&OD for short distances, and I always enjoyed running, so I decided to look up local races to combine both. Before long I started reading about triathlons, swimming was something that I never attempted in my life and I decided to take on the challenge. I looked up local triathlon teams for guidance, and that’s when I reached out to FeXY and really started learning about triathlons while running, riding and swimming with great experienced athletes.  I did my first sprint triathlon in 2016, it took me a while to finish my pool swim but it felt great. Since then I have done many triathlons but I stay away from long distance triathlons due to modest open-water swimming abilities. In the last couple of years, I have taken many coaching certifications in Triathlon, Cycling and Running. I am fascinated with the science behind periodization plans, human body adaptations and data analysis.
I am excited to take on the workout coordinator role for this season, I am always happy to give back to my team FeXY!

Scott Baldwin

President Emeritus

I was a cross-country and track runner during my four years of high school. Freshman year of college, I walked  on to the Division I Northeastern University track team and ran the 400m hurdles for NU for two years. I  recognized that I was only an average athlete, and thus spent the next 10 years focusing my efforts on family and  education. I went on to earn a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University, I had three kids, and I got  terribly out of shape – packing on 25 pounds.

On a business trip to Hawaii one year, I had the opportunity to witness Ironman Hawaii and decided that I wanted  to participate in that race some day. One major hurdle: I didn’t know how to swim. I spent the next eight years  trying to earn my “golden-ticket” to the big dance. In 2008, I had my big breakthrough and qualified for Kona at  Ironman Lake Placid by placing second in the M40-44 division, despite monsoon-like conditions. I attribute my  success at that race to knowing the course really well (4th time racing at Lake Placid and failing miserably twice),  endless running in the winter, tons of volume on the bike through the spring and early summer, and continual  integration of mental toughness. I also credit my success to friends and family. They drag me out of the house on  cold mornings, push me harder than I would push myself, and they encourage me when times get tough.

I wanted to create the same training environment and camaraderie through Team FeXY – a formal team that trains, races, and socializes together. My goal is to build a group of people from all over the US – of all experience levels, backgrounds & abilities – who are passionate about what they do and who want to be part of a group with common interests and goals. Members of Team FeXY will be able to train and race endurance sports to the best of their ability. This will be another big year for Team FeXY as we expand beyond the DC Area to other regions of the US (currently expanding into Texas and North Carolina), as well as for me while I make another push for Kona in a few years.
